Some pain is normal immediately after the procedure. This can persist for up to a week depending on the severity of the infection in the tooth. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics and/or pain medication to help with discomfort.
Typically, taking over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen (Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) is sufficient for most patients. Taking these medications before the numbness wears off can help with pain immediately after the procedure.
